El Carmen Nature Reserve Prescribed Burn / Hugo Sotelo
April 17, 2019.
Controlled burning is an important tool for the restoration of habitats. The natural cycle of fire in El Carmen Nature Reserve has a periodicity of 10 to 20 years. However, with the introduction of livestock in the region, these cycles were altered.
Every year, meetings are held in El Carmen Nature Reserve prior to wildfires season, where federal authorities (CONANP, CONAFOR), state authorities (SMA Coahuila) and El Carmen Staff participate. In these meetings, the Incident Command System (ICS) is updated, through which the actions to be taken in the event of contingencies are coordinated, as well as fire ecology plans, prescribed burns and natural fuels management; all of the above in order to conserve the biodiversity of the Reserve and its surroundings.
